Business Offers a Listening Ear

When Sue Doherty was made redundant from her position as student and staff counsellor at a local college she decided to turn it into a positive by setting up her own private practice.

“There are very few counselling jobs around at the moment” said Sue “Knowing this, I decided that the best option was for me to set up my own business.”

Sue, who is also a mother-of-three is an accredited counsellor and has worked in the profession for the past 11 years. She came to Train 2000 where she took part in the business start-up course and subsequently received one-to-one business advice.

Sue said: “When I decided to set up my own business I really was expecting to have to do it all by myself, so when I heard about the support offered through Business Start-Up and Train 2000 I was delighted. All the help I have received has been truly fantastic.

“At the moment it is early days for me and I am very aware that it will take me some time to build up my client base. I am doing everything I can to attract new clients including promoting my counselling services via employers, colleges, organisations, GP’s and just generally trying to get my name about.”

Sue provides one-to-one counselling and at present holds sessions at the Chester Counselling & Psychotherapy Centre where she rents a room for just one morning a week, until demand increases.

“A lot of people can really benefit from going to see a counsellor” Sue added, “but sometimes it can be a difficult step for people to take, or they may not even be aware of how it could help them.

“I am available to offer counselling on any aspect of life including stress, work-life balance, relationship problems and just anything that people feel they need to talk about.”

In a bid to expand on the counselling services she offers Sue is also looking to deliver a number of courses including assertiveness training, confidence building, developing listening skills and coping with stress.
