The Altrincham Handyman: Home and Building Maintenance
Qualified mechanical electrical engineer Ken Snelson made the decision to go self-employed after a serious back injury forced him give up his career. He had always wanted to work for himself, and after several years of being out of work, he decided to approach his local Business Support Solutions team to ask for some advice. With the help of a Business Advisor, he worked on a business plan, got help with setting up basic bookkeeping accounts, and organising his cash flow. He also entered an enterprise competition and won a £1000 development grant that enabled him to update his electrical qualifications.
Ken set up the Altrincham Handyman, with a focus on small to medium sized home improvements. He wanted to reach local people who needed someone who could offer a variety of services including electrical, plumbing, joinery, and building work. With the help of friends and family he designed a website and ordered stationery so he could start to market his business to local people.
Since setting up, Ken has successfully secured contracts to carry out maintenance work at a number of commercial offices around Greater Manchester. He also works with people in their own homes and can turn his hand to most types of building and maintenance work. Delighted to be back in work, Ken said “Working with the team at Business Support Solutions has been fantastic, it’s been a real help having someone to talk to about getting my idea off the ground. “I still keep in touch with my Advisor, and attend the free workshops on offer for new start-ups. It’s a great way to network, and meet other people who have set up. I’m really enjoying working for myself and being my own boss.”
