Matthew Smith
Housing Benefit Liasion Service
Matthew Smith had recently separated from his partner and was fighting for access rights to see his daughter. As a result of high court costs he found a great deal of his expendable income was being used up. He had previously worked for four years as a housing benefit assessor and a ‘one stop shop’ advisor for three years previous to that.
Due to a new job opportunity failing he unfortunately became unemployed. It was at this time he decided to set up his own company which he saw as a way to provide a better way of life for himself and his daughter. His only option to fulfil his business idea was to approach the Princes Trust as they would be able to offer advice, support and funding.
Matthews’ previous work inspired his business idea and he proposed to set up a mobile service to landlords and letting agents which would offer advice on how to maximise benefits claimants’ rental income. Matthew believed that this service was not currently available to the people that needed it the most.
With the advice and support from The Princes Trust, Matthew was awarded start up finance for the company and in the process has gained confidence and a more positive outlook on life. The Trust also provided him with a mentor who would be able to encourage and support him on a personal and business level.
He has now successfully launched his new business, Housing Benefit Liaison Service. This offers a specialist service to landlords and letting agencies which help to maximise rental income and reduce the associated problems with benefit claims. Matthew Smith has no competitors offering a combined and specialised service which will stand him in good stead as he has already generated interest in the business.
