Nick Carter
JBS Building Contractors
Having been unemployed for several months, Nick decided to go self-employed as a builder. Whilst he had previously worked in the trade for local contractors, he had never been self-employed before, and with the building trade only just beginning to come out of recession, Nick was aware that he was taking a calculated risk. But he was confident that with his local contacts, and a professional approach to business, he could make it work.
Nick was referred by JobCentre Plus to Enterprise4All for their business start-up support programme. E4All helped Nick develop his Business Plan and advised him on all aspects of becoming self-employed.
Nick started trading in January 2010 and his first contract was to undertake the bricklaying for two new homes being built in Carnforth. Before long he was given the additional work of roofing and fitting out both properties. Since then Nick hasn’t looked back. The business continues to go from strength to strength.
As Nick puts it – “Going self-employed is the best move I ever made”
