Nicola O'Boyle decided to set up her own event management business after spending six years working for the 2008 Capital of Culture.

The 25-year-old had a dream to open a full service event management agency and work in partnership with the UK’s largest event suppliers.

After deciding to take the plunge and setting up a business account with her bank, Nicola was recommended to contact Train 2000.

Train 2000 is a specialist organisation which offers enterprise and employment services for women. Advisors helped Nicola to write a business plan and apply for a £500 grant, which allowed her to build a website and print business cards.

These first invaluable steps led to Nicola seeking further help from Train 2000 by learning the practical side of business management, such as book keeping, PR, website awareness and financial training.

Nicola, who also studied event management at university, said: “I’m in a very lucky position with plenty of support from family and friends which has allowed to set up my own business. I thought that if I waited until I was older, then it would be more difficult because of the financial commitments which occur as you get older, such as a family or a mortgage.

“Once I decided to set up on my own, I was advised to approach Train 2000, which equipped me with valuable, practical advice I would need to start the business.”

Nicola now splits her time between her office and attending events on-site, where she directs suppliers and ensures the smooth running of events which she has planned meticulously during her time in the office.

Nicola added: “I work harder now than I ever have for someone else, but it’s extremely satisfying to know that I get to reap the benefits, which includes flexible work hours. The best part though, is that incredible boost you get when you win a tender contract and know it was down to all your own hard work and persistence.

“I’m now looking to start another line of business hiring out event equipment like fun photobooths, which can be used for birthday parties or even be branded up and used as a corporate marketing tool.”
